Ringing, buzzing, chirping, crickets, radio static… I’ve heard it all. Literally, I have heard it. Because I have tinnitus. Although there is not a cure for tinnitus the Riesberg Institute can help make tinnitus more manageable.
Hearing loss effects more than the ability to communicate with others, it can lead to various other health issues. However choosing to treat hearing loss aggressively could decrease your risk of cognitive decline, falling, and other health concerns. At Riesberg Institute our audiologist, is committed to finding the perfect fit for you and your hearing needs.
As many of us know we do not hear with our ears, we hear with our brain! As you put off treating your hearing loss the strain on your brain can lead to cognitive overload. Additionally, this negative impact on your brain leads to other health issues that impact your life.
For people with hearing loss, the constant effort of trying to hear and understand strains and stresses the brain and can weaken a person’s working memory. In fact, brain scans have shown diminished gray matter in people with hearing loss especially in a region associated with spoken language and semantic memory. This is the same region associated with early Alzheimer’s.
Although your brain shrinks with age, it has been shown to shrink faster in adults with hearing problems. People with poorer hearing have less gray matter in the auditory cortex. This is the region of the brain that is necessary to support speech and comprehension.
With even just mild hearing loss, the risk of falling is three times more likely than people with no hearing loss according to Edison Standford Intelligent Hearing. When a person has to concentrate so fully on trying to hear, the concentration efforts may take cognitive resources away from what is needed for balance. This adds to the statistic of adults with hearing loss having more hospitalizations due to the dangers of this impairment.
Communicating is vital in everyday life, oftentimes leading to social isolation, fatigue and stress. All of this can lead to episodes of depression. In fact, over half of people with hearing loss are more likely to have deep episodes of stress, depression or anxiety.
